The Church of Our Lady of Victory is one of the most famous places of pilgrimage in the Czech Republic. There is the wax statue of the Baby Jesus of Prague, of Spanish origin and object of devotion for pilgrims from all over the world.
The Little Jesus of Prague is a small votive statue of wax, approximately 47 cm high and representing Jesus Christ in his infantile stage. In his right hand, the christ makes a sign of blessing and on the left, a real sphere.
From Spain, this statue was part of the dowry received by the Duchess Maria Manrique de Lara during her marriage to a Czech nobleman in 1556. Her daughter, Polyxena de Lobkowicz, presented the statue to the monastery of the nuns of the Carmelites del Praz, linked with the Church of Our Lady of Victory. Numerous miracles were attributed to the Child Jesus during the Baroque period, especially the Protection of Prague during the invasion of the Swedes in 1639. In 1651, processions were organized in his honor throughout the city before his coronation in 1655 by the archbishop of Prague. Nowadays, the statue is still an object of worship for pilgrims from all over the world.
His famous "clothing" composed of more than one hundred precious dresses received as an offer of anonymous or illustrious pilgrims. The most famous embroidered shelters, as well as a large number of objects connected to the cult of the statuette, are in the museum of the Child Jesus of Prague, located in the church, behind the main altar.
The building itself, with a particularly hectic and original history, is also a remarkable work from the architectural point of view. With its construction begun between the years 1611 - 1613, this building was one of the first Lutheran temples constructed in Prague under the reign of the emperor Rodolfo II. According to sources, the architect was Catholic, probably Giovanni Maria Fillippi, who was the official architect of Rodolfo II. Very important in the history of Bohemian architecture, the Fillippi project (preserved in the city museum of Prague) was directly inspired by the contemporary architecture of Rome, mainly by the facade of the Trinity church of the Montes de Giacomo della Porta. This church is considered as one of the first proto-baroque of Prague, with its arched central nave and its two monumental towers.
Everything changed after 1620, after the Czech defeat of the White Mountain: the church was then taken from the Protestants and given to the Catholic Order of the Discalced Carmelites and renamed to Our Lady of Victory. The Carmelites changed the plan of the church in a radical way: initially oriented to the hill of Petřín, the church was oriented to the street. A new façade was built, inspired again by the more contemporary Roman architecture and the model of Santa Maria della Victoria of Rome, whose history is also closely linked to the Battle of the White Mountain. The two towers of the Fillippi project were never finished and the old façade was replaced by a very traditional set with sharp gothic arches.
Museum: open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday from 1pm to 6pm (free admission).
