Declared a National Monument in 1960, it is one of the best preserved colonial houses in the city.
In this building, the First Governmental Council was established in 1810, and they were also there after the Battle of Chacabuco (1817), Jose de San Martin and Bernardo O'Higgins.
Dom Mateo de Toro and Zambrano lived here until his death in February 1811. Later, the Colorado House was also the residence of Lord Cochrane.
Over the years, housing has undergone major transformations, delivered to the excesses of overwhelming marketing. In 1977, the building was expropriated by the municipality of Santiago for its restoration, which has been rescuing its initial landlord. The present state of the house does not correspond to its primitive construction, only the original two-story body structure overlooking Merced Street is preserved. The first courtyard was rebuilt, completing it with enclosures similar to the originals and an east facade that the house did not have. Currently Casa Colorada houses the Santiago Museum, being in very good condition; samples related to the foundation of Santiago and its development over time are displayed.
