The Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa is a national monument in the parish of Seda, municipality of Alter do Chão.
It still allows the crossing of the Seda river by the EN 245, at the border of the municipalities of Alter do Chão and Crato, district of Portalegre, and is classified as a National Monument.
Chronologically, this work lies between the 1st and 2nd centuries d. C., and its planning reveals great quality, both in terms of engineering solution, and also for its artistic beauty. In fact, the solid bridge is constructed of robust rigged and cushioned stonework, revealing a symmetrical balance and undeniable beauty among its various parts. Structurally, it is made up of six perfect-back arches with 33 staves, all equal to each other and recording an arch diameter of 8.95 meters, alternating with five ported eyes. The total length of its board reaches about 117 meters, reaching its maximum height 8.40 meters, measured between the stone guards and the surface of the riverbed.
This Roman bridge is still fundamental today in the regional road traffic.
