The neighborhood in which it is located is a neighborhood with colonial features; for its houses with mojinete roofs and colorful balconies. The vicar and First Priest, Juan A. Montenegro y Ubaldi, began its construction in 1828, it was completed in 1830. Apparently, since those years it has been called the Temple of Bethlehem, since the Bethlehem order paid special veneration to Our Lady of Bethlehem , whose image for many years was in one of the corridors.
This temple located on Moquegua street, block 11, district of Moquegua, province of Mariscal Nieto, department of Moquegua, was declared a Monument of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation, with National Directorial Resolution No. 175 / INC of February 3, 2006.
The structures of the Belen Chapel date from 1828, built on the foundations of a previous factory, the original factory has been built with caisson stone walls, the original vault of the single nave with a truncated mojinete with wooden decking is preserved and covered in mud cake. In later renovations, in the 20th century, a false ceiling with a barrel vault was incorporated, built with cane and plaster, likewise, the treatment of the side altars and the decorative elements of neoclassical style on the walls of the epistolary and of the gospel.
Towards the interior, the wooden dome of the presbytery with a lantern and the main stone altarpiece of two bodies and three streets stand out. The current sacristy has evidence of a chapel belonging to the factory of the old Betlemitico Hospital from the year 1745. It has a high choir towards the foot wall and a pulpit with ornamental characteristics similar to the side altars.
On the facade of the Temple there are two attached towers, one on each side of the nave, in the central street the semicircular arch that frames the main entrance crowned by a truncated mojinete stands out.
The Temple is part of the urban complex of the Barrio de Belen, important for its location and relationship with the old buildings that make up the Monumental Urban Environment and Monumental Zone of Moquegua.
