Huanchaco
Huanchaco is a Peruvian city and historic center located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in the district of Huanchaco, which integrates the metropolitan area of Trujillo, in the region of La Libertad, currently part of the Moche Route. It is the most visited tourist center of the city of Trujillo, where the Mochicas gave origin to ceviche, a dish of Peruvian cuisine of international recognition. During the reign of the Moche and Chimú cultures, Huanchaco was an important port in the region. Huanchaco is famous all over the world for the legendary "totora" horses used for navigation and fishing since the time of the Mochicas and also of the Chimu. Even today the fishermen of Huanchaco continue with this ancestral tradition.
The name of Huanchaco comes from Guaukocha (beautiful lagoon with golden fish). Nowadays, it is a traditional place and a picturesque spa, a must stop for tourists visiting the province of Trujillo.
