Iceland
Iceland is a Nordic European island country situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its territory covers the homonymous island and some small islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located between continental Europe and Greenland. Its capital and largest city is Reykjavik, whose metropolitan area houses about two-thirds of the national population. Due to its location on the mid-Atlantic ridge, Iceland has a large volcanic activity and an important geothermal gradient, which greatly affects its landscape. The interior consists mainly of a plateau characterized by sand fields, mountains and glaciers. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, Iceland has a temperate climate compared to its latitude and offers a livable environment.

Tourism
The Icelandic landscape is barren with an almost moonlit but beautiful and even charming landscape with a rough nature, with waterfalls, volcanoes, mountains, plateaus and rivers. Because of the beauty of the landscape nature tourism is an important resource for Iceland, but Iceland's economy is still mainly based on fishing and fishing related activities.
Iceland is filled with many volcanoes (more than 200) - some still active - and huge glaciers. They are the largest in Europe, including the Vatnajökull in the southeast of the island, which measures 8,456 km². The interior of the island is formed by a vast plateau that next to the south coast reaches 2,119 meters of altitude with Mount Hvannadalshnukur.
There are more than 6,000 km of coastline. In the south the coast is low and sandy, while in other areas it is high and rocky. There are jagged fjords and steep cliffs. The rivers, including the longest, which is Thjórsá, have a fairly regular regime, but influenced by the thaw. Its courses are often marked by the presence of waterfalls, some of which are among the most beautiful and most visited attractions in the country.

Gastronomy
Icelandic cuisine is based on fish, mutton and dairy products, with a Danish and Norwegian influence. One of the most popular dishes is the Þorramatur.
Another traditional preparation is the thunder-bread, cooked inside the hot springs.

Climate
Iceland's coastline climate is subpolar oceanic, meaning it has fresh, short summers and mild winters with temperatures that do not drop below -3 ° C. Temperatures in the country are relatively mild compared to other regions at the same latitude. The Gulf's maritime current, which is a flow of hot water from Central America to northern Europe, makes temperatures warmer and winters less severe. The entire coast of the country, mainly in the southern part, is warmer because of this sea current, which generally prevents the formation of ice blocks (even in winter).
Storms with rain and thunderstorms are quite rare in Iceland, but occur in late summer when hot air masses are deflected from Europe to the northern latitudes; on average less than five days a year.

Health
It is advisable to obtain comprehensive medical and travel insurance before traveling. As Iceland belongs to the European Economic Area (EEA), the citizens belonging to it, are covered by a health system for emergency treatment.
This document is not a substitute for medical travel insurance, but gives you the right to receive the same type of medical care enjoyed by Icelanders in an emergency. The European Health Insurance Card also does not cover repatriations for medical reasons, or long-term or non-emergency treatment. Despite the quality of health services, the distances between the different centers may be significant. Most villages have a medical center, but for more serious cases it is necessary to use ambulances or air transport to reach the hospital in Reykjavik or Akureyri.
