The Thorvaldsen Museum (Thorvaldsens Museum) is an art museum dedicated to the preservation of the work and memory of Bertel Thorvaldsen, one of the great sculptors of European Neoclassicism. It is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.
In addition to having most of the plaster originals that gave rise to his sculptures, the museum's collection holds personal objects, documents, and a section made up of the sculptor's large collection of art and antiques.
The building where today the Thorvaldsen Museum is installed was that of the royal stables, next to the Christiansborg palace, in the center of Copenhagen, but it was completely redone between 1839 and 1848 by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, although it maintains similar proportions to the original building. Its facade is discreet, with five large doors topped by rectangular windows, framed by elements in relief, with Corinthian pilasters in the corners and a sturdy cornice slightly ornamented above. A bronze statuary group was installed on the center of the building, representing a chariot led by Vitória. On the sides there is a series of panels in painting executed by Jørgen Sonne, which illustrate episodes from the artist's life and scenes of the arrival of some of the works of art at the museum.
The interior is divided into three floors with several small exhibition rooms, which provide peaceful environments for appreciating the collection without the distracting impact of an indiscriminate overview. The lobby is decorated with the originals of the large pieces, and the group of Christ and the Apostles he produced for the Cathedral of Our Lady occupies a special room. The decoration of each room varies in its mosaics and colors, and the ornamental motifs evoke the decoration of the buildings of classical antiquity. The Museum arose from a suggestion made in 1827 by the artist himself to the Crown Prince Christian Frederik, later King Cristiano VIII, that he would donate his collection to Denmark if an adequate place for its preservation was built. In 1830, the artist confirmed his intention, leaving his estate for the country in testament, and in 1837 a national movement was launched to raise funds for the work.
Love and Psyche
When Thorvaldsen returned to Denmark in 1840 after almost forty years residing in Rome, the king donated the land for the construction of the museum, and the city of Copenhagen contributed a large amount. Architect Michael Bindesbøll was appointed to manage the work and the works started in 1839, being inaugurated on September 18, 1848. At this point the sculptor no longer existed, and his remains were transferred from Copenhagen Cathedral to a tomb in the inner courtyard. .
The core of the collection is the collection of plaster originals created for the author as a definitive model for his sculptures, which were transferred to marble or bronze from these originals. In addition there are some pieces finished in marble, sketches, drawings, paintings, books and many other personal objects of the artist. In total there are almost 300 reliefs, 90 works and statuary and 150 busts.
Another section is on sculptures by other artists, there is a department for copies of classic sculptures, and the collection is completed with the group of antiques, numismatics, vases, paintings, drawings and prints gathered by the sculptor in his life, who they are of international level, with pieces by the main European artists and their contemporaries.
