Il villaggio di São Bento do Ameixial sarebbe già esistito nel 1258, a giudicare dalle informazioni del primo formo di Estremoz, con il nome di Aldeia do Penedo.
Secondo Túlio Espanca, la chiesa parrocchiale fu fondata all'inizio del XVI secolo come raccomandazione dell'Ordine di Avis, essendo stata visitata ecclesiasticamente nel 1534.

Il suo aspetto attuale è più coerente con gli edifici rurali del XVII secolo o del XVIII secolo dell'Alentejo, sebbene mantenga le torri angolari cilindriche esterne del presbiterio che indicano il periodo manuelino.
Ha due croci laterali alla porta principale, realizzate in mattonelle policrome tipiche del diciassettesimo secolo. Di interesse artistico è anche il gabinetto della sacrestia marmorea, con ghirlande di pergamene a chiocciola, datato 1698.
