Le village de São Bento do Ameixial aurait déjà existé en 1258, à en juger par les informations du premier formulaire d'Estremoz, nommé Aldeia do Penedo.
Selon Túlio Espanca, l'église paroissiale a été fondée au début du XVIe siècle par éloge de l'Ordre de Avis, après avoir été visitée de manière ecclésiastique en 1534.

Son apparence actuelle est plus cohérente avec les bâtiments ruraux de l’Alentejo datant du XVIIe ou du XVIIIe siècle, bien qu’il conserve les tours angulaires extérieures cylindriques du presbytère qui évoquent la période manuéline.
Il a deux croix latérales à la porte principale, faites de carreaux polychromes typiques du XVIIe siècle. Les lavabos de la sacristie en marbre, avec des guirlandes de rouleaux avec remontage, datés de 1698, présentent également un intérêt artistique.
